I’m not a comics retailer or that much of a Captain America fan, but it’s pretty darn hard to venture out onto the comics blogosphere without running headlong into the continuing trickles of fall-out from last week’s events. Accordingly, even a mostly disinterested by-stander like your Eddie-tor can find himself with some impressions to share and lots of pontificating to do.
To wit:
One of these days, it would behoove Marvel to remember that their customer base is the comics retailers. Making vague statements about how “big” a book is going to be is not the same as giving your customers information they can actually use.
I wonder how many non-Cap readers took a chance on ordering this issue based on Marvel’s vague solicits? If retailers didn’t see a massive boost in pre-orders, why would they want to take the risk without more information?
The Direct Market is, what, thirty years old now, and there are still comics readers who don’t have a clue about non-returnability and how it affects what a store will order? That boggles my mind.
If Marvel wanted to keep the story itself under wraps, could they not have at least shared some info about their pr/marketing plans? “We’re planning a major PR push for this one, including CNN, the NY Post, and many other major news outlets. We anticipate that this will greatly increase demand for this issue from the general public, so you might want to get ready for it.” That’s a little more concrete and specific than “Trust us. It’s going to be big. Order lots.”
Yes, I know that a major news happening could very well have scuttled all those PR plans, leaving retailers with unsold issues, but that’s beyond Marvel’s control. At least my way, Marvel would have tried to work with their customers.
And would it have really hurt Marvel to say that any increases retailers made in their orders before FOC would be returnable? “We don’t think you’ll need it, but every issue you increase your original order by will be 100% returnable. Take a chance on this one! We’re standing behind you!” If I were a retailer, that’s the kind of vote of confidence I’d be looking for from Marvel.
I don’t understand the grand fear of spoilers that pervades this little hobby. Is it really that bad to find out what happens before getting a chance to read the comic? Knowing what happened in the story is still not the same as actually reading the story. I’m always as interested in how the story was told as I am in the story itself. No spoiler can tell me that.
Lots of fans are perturbed by the whole thing. Some are pissed. Some are cynical. Still, there are responses, and then there are responses. Long live the little stuffed bull! Huzzah!
*Okay, so the ideas's not overly original, but I had been holding onto these images for a while now, waiting for some inspiration to use them, which Dorian provided yesterday.
Somebody must have had a job interview or something.
I should know something by the end of the week, but I'm on the fence about how to feel. On the one hand, I think I did okay, but I'm not sure I sold them on the idea that I'm the one they really, really, really want. I know I could do a helluva a job in this position. I just hope they saw it.
Keep the good thoughts going for a little while, please.
Well, let’s just say that the drag Wonder Women didn’t show up and rescue me and leave it at that. Damn!
With my luck, they'll bust into my job interview today and blow that for me. Sigh!
Yes, I've got an interview today at 2:30 p.m., Central time. Out of all the stuff I've applied for in the past month, this is the only nibble I've gotten. It's also the one job I'd really love to get. It's a perfect fit for me. I just need to convince them.
I'd appreciate any prayers(to whatever or whomever), thoughts, good energy or anything else you can muster on my behalf.
Even if everything else about this year sucks, it's going to be a good one for music. Besides the Patty G. and Lucinda W. I've been raving about, Mary Gauthier is supposed to have a new one coming out. There's no word about it on either her website or her label's, but it was mentioned in an ad last month in No Depression.
Here's a video of her doing a new song, which will probably be on the new release:
I can't help but wonder (sorry about that) how many of the objections to the film Joss Whedon was going to make were really based on the fact that he wasn't simply going to remake the TV show?
Today is not going to be a good one. Not at all. It's time for the quarterly meeting-for-the-sake-of-having-a-meeting! I have to run the thing, spending the morning dealing with both the bitter and the clueless, accomplishing exactly nothing. What fun!
Wonder if I could get these guys to come rescue me?
I mean, there's nothing that a half-dozen drag Wonder Women can't face, is there? Especially when they have the help of a really cute Robin (Richard, the last one), Wonder Butch Guy, Singing Superman, and several others.
And Lord knows I need the smiles these days. I've decided to fight the grumpies this week by emphasizing the postive in my blog.
Some things that have cheered me up lately:
Otter Prime. (I need more of this in my life, please!!!)
The art of Katie Cook. Seriously, how can you be grumpy when there are monster hugs to share?
Image copyright Katie Cook. (I saw this first at Comics Worth Reading, although Kevin had it earlier. I think my mind was too blown by Otter Prime to notice.)
Roger says that my first name is still the second most popular! (It used to be first, but I'll settle for this.)
Thrift store and book sale finds! (If I can't get to any on my own right now, I'll live vicariously through others! Isn't the web wonderful? Isn't my life pathetic? Oh, wait, I'm supposed to be more cheerful.) New Pogo collections! Yay! (I know this one was all over the place last week, but I saw it first from Dorian.)
And, best of all, I have a job interview a week from Monday! Thhink good thoughts, folks, please. There's nothing wrong with me or my attitude that a change of employment won't fix. And out of everything I've applied for, this is the job I really want.
Went looking on YouTube for Meat Purveyors videos to include in my posting the other night. Didn'tfind any "official" videos, but did find this one.
I normally ignore these fan-made photo montage videos, because they are so common on YouTube and most of them are not that good. Apparently every song every recorded can be applied to some anime character or plot or another.
But I liked this one. It's an easy target, yes, but reasonably clever nonetheless. The Purveyors' general attitude towards life kind of sums up mine at this moment. And the more I find out about Bush's latest budget plans, the more I dislike him and what passes for his leadership style. And I didn't think that was possible!
So, here's today's grumpy political video posting:
I'm just too pissy right now to do anything about it here in the blog. So go enjoy some of these other guys and leave me to my foul mood. And shut the door on your way out.
