According to Wikipedia, this was number 1 on November 7, 1964, which is the closest date to my birthday I could find a chart for. Yes, I am one of those "extended birthday celebration" kind of people, as many of you already know.
Diana Ross has always had a talent for wigs, no?
Also, that cute little shimmy dance during the sax solo? LOVE! Baby Love, in fact!

And today, I am 52!
It's time for....
Well, comics geeks will get the joke anyway.
You see, for the past couple of decades or so, major comic companies have gotten in the habit of reinventing their lines every so often--tossing out everything that has gone before and starting it all over. This is why the Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, et al that you see today are very different from the ones that were being published in the 90's, the 80's, the 70's, and so on and so on.
It's also one of the reasons why I prefer to stick to reading pre-1990 super-hero books. It's gotten way too confusing to try and keep up.
Anyway, in 2011, DC comics did a relaunch they called "The New 52."
Since this is my 52nd birthday, and thus the start of a whole new year for me, I decided that would also be a pretty nifty theme for this birthday.
Not to mention allowing me to do a birthday post and a Comic Book Friday post in one fell swoop!
EDIT: Oh yeah! I forgot to mention that there's a theme song too. All good birthdays have one, you know.
Just take out "New Zoo Review" and sing "The New 52" in its place. Totally works.
Singing pink hippos optional. (But who wouldn't want one?)

And today, I am 51
Or, as I have taken to saying, I have completed 51 revolutions around the sun. I guess this could also be looked at as the start of my 52nd revolution around the sun. Come with me. It is your destiny.
Fifty-one is an odd number. It's divisible by three, which is cool. Numbers that divide by three are my favorites. Yes, I said that. Actually my real favorite numbers are ones with six or more digits when they are found in my checking account. Since that never happens, I'll stick with numbers divisible by three.
Do you all know the easy way to tell if 3 will go into a given number? Add the digits of the number up. If the sum is divisible by three, then the original number is.
Six is divisible by three, so 51 is divisible by three.
If you can't tell if the sum is divisible by three, keep adding the digits together until you come to a sun that you can tell.
Not sure what you've got? Keep going!
Six is divisible by three, so 578,424,372 is too. And also 42! Isn't it cool?
When I was a kid I used to entertain myself on car trips by seeing if the numbers on billboards, license plates, etc were divisible by three. I still do it sometimes when I'm bored. Once a nerd, always a nerd.
Finally, the source of my fascination with threes. I was a kid in the 70's after all. The part when they start counting by threes gets me every time.
Happy Birthday to me! (I don't think "51st Revolution Around the Sun Completion Day" works in the song. Someone will have to do something about that.)

Birthday Rambles
And today, I am the big 5-0! Half century! Woo hoo! I keep waiting for someone to give me the golden birthday crown. I thought it would be waiting on the porch for me this morning, but no.
We'll be trotting off to vote this morning in just a few. I hope the line isn't too long, since I have to make it to the cancer center after that. Birthday election days make me nervous. There have been a few in my life, and they don't always go the way I would like. You'd think being the birthday boy would mean I would get to choose the winner, but the system doesn't seem to work that way. Still, there's a certain senior Senator from Kentucky that I would love to see get the boot today. If that were to happen, this would be a happy birthday indeed.
Please remember to do your civic duty and go vote. Do it as a birthday observance, if nothing else. Cheaper than a card, after all. Even if all your votes cancel all mine out, please vote.
I spent the weekend starting the annual birthday thrifting run. In case you're newer around here, every year, starting the weekend before my birthday and running through the weekend after, we have a massive orgy of thrift store runs, Halloween clearance shopping, flea market raids, and any yard sales we can find. It's my grand stock up for winter spree.
Saturday was FREEZING, but we did hit two yard sales. Due to the temps, we didn't head out until about ten (and it was still COLD), but we got some great deals, because the sellers were giving up and packing it in. We also went to one store that I know goes to 75% off on their Halloween on November 1, only to find that this year they did not. Then we started thrifting.
I needed to go move into my new booth set up in the new store, so I planned the thrift route to go right over the bridge and across the river. I had hoped to do some shopping while I was in the mall, but did not have time. It took five solid hours of work to get everything moved and set up. I also decided to price and put out the majority of the day's purchases right then. It was exhausting, but worth it. My sales picked up right away and for the past two days have been at the same level as the other store. Woo hoo!
It's not perfect just yet, but it's workable for the moment. The previous vendor left all this really crappy beat up shit in the booth that she had used for displays. I'm talking really crappy, crappy stuff: a computer desk with none of the parts attached, a china hutch with no drawers, an entertainment stand with no shelves. And all of it had really badly done swatches of maroon :accent" painting that was supposed to tie it all together--a shelf here, a drawer front there, one piece of trim out of seven pieces, etc. I think it was supposed to look shabby and eclectic, but it really just looks like someone watched HGTV while on a pot binge.
The mall said the vendor didn't want to move all that crap out and that I could have it if I wanted. I'm still needing some more fixtures for display, so I kept most of it. I did however throw away the Rubbermaid storage drawer tower that did not have any drawers in it. It had been used as a shelf! Can you believe it? I think I can sue HGTV over that one. The rest of it I have priced real cheap. I have no reason to keep it for too long, but most of it is huge and heavy and I am not too inclined to try and haul it out. I sold one of the shelves while I was setting the space up. The customer hated the maroon paint on the trim, but loved my five dollar price.
If it's still there after the holidays, I'll take a chainsaw and wood chipper to it, but for right now I can live with it. I'll have some pics as soon as I can remember to take them. I forgot on Saturday.
Well, today is also big treatment day #1. I will make everyone at the cancer center sing to me. I think they should also let me be in charge for the day, but I would probably order free pain killers for everyone, so maybe that's not the best idea. I want a special hat though.
I'll update you all tomorrow with all the details on the treatment. I'm just hoping that my veins decide to cooperate this time around. Tonight, if I am up to it, we are going to my favorite local restaurant to eat. I intend to be up to it. Cancer meds or no, I only get to eat at Zen Garden a couple of times a year. No damn melanoma on my freaking spleen is going to make me miss this one.

And Today I Am 49!
Geez! That's just one shy of (gulp!) 50!!!! It's also 7x7, which is kind of cool. I am an age that has a square root!
Regular Monday Rambles is pre-empted, since it's usually largely about my weekend and I sorta blogged about that while it was happening. The Extravaganza Thrifting Celebration will continue this weekend. I learned from my mother that you need to celebrate your birthday and long and as often as you can.
In fact, she was convinced that Keith either had several birthdays a year or made up several so he could keep celebrating. Whenever his birthday rolled around, she would always insist that we had just had his birthday a couple of months earlier. "How many birthdays does he have?" She would ask that every time.
This brings me to the end of my posting every day blogiversary gig, too. It was fun while it lasted, but I need to go back to my regular several times a week schedule.
Happy Birthday to me! Indeed:

Belated Rambles
Okay, so how about some belated rambling? Sound good? Here we go!
Like I said on Monday, I spent most of last week sick with a bad cold. My whole routine was: stagger out of bed, take Dayquil, go to work, stagger home, take Nyquil, go to bed, repeat. If I hadn't planned out those birthday posts weeks ago, then I wouldn't have had anything on the blog at all. There really wasn't a lot to write about.
Thankfully, I was starting to get better by the time of the birthday celebration. As usual, the birthday weekend was devoted to my favorite activities: eating out and second-hand shopping. In the days before I had a booth, I was looking for stuff for my collections and such. Nowadays, it's a merch hunt, although I did find a cool stash of old comics for myself. Since the yard sale season has pretty much died (more on that later), the birthday event is kind of like my really big push to make sure that I'm stocked enough for winter.
As I get older, it's surprising to me how tired I am at the end of the weekend. Wheeling a cart around a bunch of vendor malls is a lot more tiring than you would think! It's also surprising to me how the secondhand retail scene has grown in this town. I used to be able to hit just about every thrift and flea market in town in one weekend. Now, it's just not possible. In fact, there are a couple of stores that have been open for a couple of years now that I have not been able to make even one visit to yet! I keep worrying that we've reached or exceeded our carrying capacity and that there's going to be some contraction in the market, but it doesn't seem to be happening yet.
As usual, it was a lot of fun and I got a lot of cool stuff. I feel better prepared for the colder months now. In fact, I might be able to get by for both booths without having to make too many merch runs during the cold months, except possibly for furniture. Seems like a good deal to me.
We did hit one yard sale (actually a church sale) over the weekend. There weren't many listed, and most of them seemed to be scraping the bottom of the barrel. This particular sale has been one of my favorites, but it usually happens much earlier in the year--February, to be exact. Going from being one of the first sales of the year to one of the last really hurt it, I think. This is the kind of church sale that allows a bunch of people to set up, but also has a large area of stuff that the church is selling. I think the date switch put the sale so late that most church members had already had their own sales, so they only had their leftovers.
I did buy a few things, but nothing really special enough to post about. A couple of oddball things happened, though, that are worth mentioning. I asked a lady how much this cubby organizer thing for a kid's room was. None of her stuff was priced. She responded with the old "How much will you give me?" b.s. I said, "Three dollars." Then she said (and I quote verbatim here):
"How about four dollars? No, make it $3.50, then meet me in the middle at $3.25. No, let's just go with three, like you said."
In other words, she countered her own counter-offer and did my negotiating for me and came out at my price! I've never seen anything like it before. Ever. I resisted the urge to ask if she had sold much that day.
There was another lady with a bunch of electronic stuff that was not priced. If someone asked about something, she would look it up on Amazon using her iPad. Whatever someone had a used one listed for on Amazon was the price she quoted and she refused to negotiate because "I could get more for it on Amazon!" I wasn't even interested in her stuff, yet I really had to suppress the urge to go over and tell her to put the damn stuff on Amazon, then wait six months or more for it to sell (if ever). Seriously, you're going to turn down someone standing in front of you with cash in hand for a mythical 20 bucks more you could make on a website where you will never, ever actually list the item? Someone needs lessons.
I spent the actual birthday day working my booth at the Peddlers Mall. Last Monday, I had started rearranging to prep for the post-Halloween merch shift, but didn't get done because I wasn't feeling well. I kind of left everything half done and then had not been back due to my cold. In other words, I had a lot of work to do to get back on schedule. Interestingly enough, I sold several more Halloween items in the days after Halloween, including the last of those damn skulls.
I pulled the Halloween stuff, rearranged the booth, tidied, and put out a ton of new stuff, including the start of Christmas. I made a new Thanksgiving display, since my other one was getting a little tired. The first round of my holiday gift idea items are out, with more still to come. It all cleaned up rather well. I forgot my camera, so you'll just have to take my word for it. Keith commented on my working on my birthday, but the booth recognizes no such special occasions. Afterwards, I started making my rounds of Halloween clearance to stock up for next year. More about that in my sales analysis post.
I'm betting I'm not the only one who stayed up too late last night watching that nail-biter of an election. Now, it's time to pull together and get things done. I'm in. Are you?

And today, I am 48!
Finally, after my false start last year, I am hitting 48. I'm actually excited about this birthday, because 48 is such a cool number. How cool?
Well, for starters you can divide it evenly by 3. All of my life, I have been
Beyond that, it ends in 8, which is an even number, which makes it divisible by 2 as well. And, since it is divisible by both 2 and 3, that means that it is also divisible by 6! Yay!
Carrying on, 48 is also divisible by 4, 8, 12 and 16! It's just a giving fountain of divisibility! A plethora of divisors! Yay, 48! Yay, me!
Numbers fascinate me. Can you tell?
Remind me of how excited I was about 48 in two years, when I'm crying about the big 5-0.
Our picture today is courtesy of the ever-so-kind Monkeybox, who uses it as part of the decorations for her birthday. It's a box of vintage letters and numbers for birthday cakes. When I saw it on her blog, I had to ask to use it here, since I was turning 48 and it says "48th Birthday" on the box! Awesomeness! Vintagey goodness!
