Brainiacs!

All this talk about my so-called "normal" brain yesterday has gotten me thinking about all the references to brains I have come across over the years.  I thought I would share some of them here.

Any talk about "normal brains" has to bring to mind this classic bit from a classic movie.  I first saw this in the theater as a young teen. This was back in the day when even little country towns had movie theaters.  I laughed so loud and hard through the movie that my mother said I embarrassed her!

A more recent brain find is this t-shirt.

One of the vendors at my new mall has one of these shirts at his booth.  I wanted to buy it for my birthday, but he only had a medium and that's a size I have not worn since I was, like, nine.  Most of the nerds I know are chubby dudes.  We like sizes that start with X.  (Note that I said "sizes" not "movies")

There's also this version of the zombie/nerd T-shirt, but I don't like the design as much.

If zombies had blogs, what would they write about?  Brains, of course.  Check out that blogroll.  Turns out there are quite a few zombie blogs.  Who knew?

Moving away from zombies, we find these two:

That's the original version of the theme, from when they were just a segment on Animaniacs and had not yet been spun off into their own show.  Ahhh...the cartoons of my young adulthood!

Of course no mention of these two would be complete without this song.  I think I may have posted it here years and years ago, but it's a classic well worth revisiting.

All together now:  Brain Stem!  Brain Stem!

To wrap up this little survey, I give you Monty Python!

We were actually watching this sketch in the car on the way to my MRI.  I walked in to the hospital muttering about "Bits of Brain."  In fact, I've been saying that just about ever since.

Well, I have to go now. My brain hurts and I need to find a specialist.

All together now:  Bits of brain!  Bits of brain!

Have Yourself a Lovecraft Little Christmas!

Despite appearances to the contrary, I'm not really all that into the Lovecraft mythos.  It just never really clicked with me.  However, there is something about a choral group that bases its music on the tales of Cthulu and the like that appeals to my inner nerd, not to mention my twisted sense of humor.  So, in honor of the season, I present Cthulu carols!

A Junking Show I Could Get Into (If It Were Real)

To be honest, I hope to get in a bit of junk-shopping while I'm at my reunion.  I may be more excited about that than I am about seeing people that I haven't heard from or thought about in decades.  A change in junking environment does a body good, you know.

Like a lot of junkers I know, I'm pretty much over the whole junking TV craze these days.  I'm hoping it's a trend that's faded, because all it really does is make things more difficult for us, because there is always some yo-yo who says that he saw 'the Pickers give 600 bucks for one just like it."  Everything boils down to commodification on those shows.  What can they get out of it?  Very little respect gets paid to an object's history or uniqueness.  They could care less about how cool or awesome it is.  No one has any joy over finding something that they can use to provide someone else an unforgettable experience.  It's stuff without any soul whatsoever.

Whether they're picking or junking or buying units or going to other auctions, there's always an obvious element of unreality to the whole deal, which is especially obvious if you're a real-life junker.  It's time for the whole thing to just go away and let us junk in peace.

However, there is one show that I would fall in line behind, if it ever made it to the TV screen:  Lake Dredge Appraisals!  Check this out:

Isn't that just the perfect parody of all of those shows?  It's on the Onion channel on YouTube.  It's definitely worth checking out.  Quite honestly, it's one of the best things on that channel.

Send the children from the room!

It's the British swear words song!  (And despite what you're thinking, it's not a Monty Python thing at all.)

Don't you just love the enthusiasm she opens up with as she blurts out "Bollocks!"  This is one that tickles me to death and if I play it too much more, I'm going to wind up humming it to myself at inopportune moments.

By the way, "Bloody Hell!" has been a favorite expression of mine for years!

Truth in Advertising

I've already mentioned that this has been a rough year for yard saling.  Too many sales are not living up to their hype.  Too many sales with only a couple of things (maybe) worth buying.  Even sure fire hits like neighborhood sales and church sales are not panning out.  It's really sad.

So, in an effort to laugh through the pain, I present to you the following.  Trust me when I say that it is wisdom born of experience.  Bitter wisdom from even more bitter experience.

HOW TO READ A YARD SALE AD

What they say:  Yard Sale at 1313 Main Street!
What they mean:  We're selling baby clothes at 1313 Main Street!

What they say:  Huge Yard Sale!
What they mean:  We've got LOTS of baby clothes!

What they say:  Awesome Yard Sale!
What they mean:  You won't believe there can be this many baby clothes in one spot!

What they say:  Multi-Family Yard Sale!
What they mean:  My sister and I are selling our baby clothes!

What they say:  Something For Everyone!
What they mean:  We've got baby boy and baby girl clothes!

What they say:  Vintage Items!
What they mean:  We're selling our five year old's clothes from when he was a baby!

What they say:  Antiques!
What they mean:  We're selling our sixteen year old's clothes from when she was a baby!

What they say:  Many Unique Items!
What they mean:  You won't find stains like these any where else!

What they say:  Furniture!
What they mean:  We've got a crib, a changing table, a high chair and a bouncy chair too!

What they say:  Much Miscellaneous!
What they mean:  Also, bottles and a diaper bag!

What they say:  Too Much To List!
What they mean:  How many more times do we have to say we have baby clothes?

Hope your saling days have been better than mine!

Your Vintage Christmas Card of the Day!

We're getting close now! Only a few more (days and cards) left! So much still to do! Hope you've enjoyed this little project as much as I have.

This is actually a much more modern image than the others, but I had to include it because it's so, well, flat-out creepy! Seriously, a demented looking child staring through a window? Whose ides of Christmas cheer is that? Stephen King?

Possible captions for the inside:

Merry Christmas from the Children of the Corn!

If you're naughty, Santa will let him loose in your living room.

This year, remember that creepy soul-stealing children need love too.

That's not Jack Frost nipping at your nose.

Crazed dementia is just another way of saying "Holiday Spirit."

Season's Greetings from your local exorcist.

Don't forget to lock your doors and windows on Christmas Eve! No telling what you might find under your tree if you don't.

Okay, that's enough of that. I have gifts to wrap. Feel free to add your own ideas in the comments section.
